From the day I heard that this fight ist going to happen, I have been wondering why in the world did Gerry Penalosa accept the fight. If you don’t know what I’m talking about, then perhaps you haven’t seen how his Puerto Rican opponent Juan Manuel Lopez fights. On paper, his record says 24 wins, 0 losses with 22 KOs. On TV, especially his last two fights which I have watched, he looks menacing–someone who can kill his opponent. From the get-go, he hammers his opponents to submission, and you’re left feeling sorry for the other boxer. Anyway, Gerry Penalosa accepted to fight Juan Manuel Lopez even if he has everthing to lose and only now did I admire his decision. The fight will be on April 25, 2009 at Bayamon, Puerto Rico and covered by HBO.

Penalosa-Lopez Highlights
Here’s a thought: Gerry accepted to fight Lopez because of the money. That’s the only reason I can think of. Of course I believe him when he says that he can beat Lopez, but you certainly don’t get into the ring just because you think you can beat somebody up. It would be very hard for us Filipinos to watch this fight, not knowing what might happen to Gerry. JuanMa is a real strong fighter, and even somebody as experienced as Gerry might not be able to handle all that raw power.
While waiting to watch the live Juan Manuel Lopez vs Gerry Penalosa fight, I compiled some Youtube video replays of both fighters with their career highlights.
Gerry Penalosa Career Highlights
Juan Manuel Lopez Knockouts
I especially like Gerry’s body shot and I hope he uses it as much as possible against Lopez. Lopez hasn’t faced top and tough competition before with Gerry’s caliber and he might not be able to handle that well-placed body shot. Who knows? With Gerry’s experience, JuanMa might be an easier puzzle to solve.
My prediction goes to the fellow Filipino, who I believe is a more intelligent and more experienced fighter. I’m crossing my fingers that even if it does not happen and Gerry got beat, he wouldn’t lose so bad by being knocked out. The young man from Puerto Rico is in for a big surprise.
Here’s the undercard for the the Lopez vs Penalosa fight.
Lamont Peterson (26-0, 12 KOs) vs. Willy Blain (20-0, 3 KOs).
I don’t have any idea how this fight will be broadcasted here in the Philippines, unlike the Donaire and Viloria fights which got a lavish promotion almost comparable to a Manny Pacquiao fight. Watching free live streaming video on a Sunday might not also be a good idea with a lot of Internet traffic going on. Two sites I will be regularly visiting will be eastsideboxing.com and Yahoo Sports!. To get updates on the fight from me, just subscribe to my feeds.
We’re praying for you to win Gerry.

for me its time for gerry to call it quit, better for him to retire, wla na cya punching power, unlike sa mga previous fights of gerry that i have seen, tama ginawa ni roach sa boxer nya, atleast hindi na knockout si gery..
