Watch here the video of the August 12, 2006 clash at Thomas & Mack Center, Las Vegas, Nevada, United States of David Diaz and Jose Armando Santa Cruzwas The lightweight title 12-rounder bout between the two was considered the fight of the night on the Hasim Rahman-Oleg Maskaev PPV show. Fast-rising Jose Armando Santa Cruz faced Diaz with his usual aggressive, high-punch-volume style while the veteran David Diaz prove dhow he can always be the tough and willing opponent in the ring. Here, Diaz found himself in the biggest fight of his career — and perhaps the toughest.

After nine rounds, it seemed that there was no hope for Diaz. The 30-year-old from Chicago was well behind in the scoring (the judges had it 88-83, 88-83 again and 87-84 in favour of Santa Cruz). In fact he looked like he couldn’t stand another beating. Still, even if he was known to be not a seriously hard hitter , out of nowhere he surprised many when he unhanded a left uppercut, The blow that landed from his southpaw stance in the 10th round was definitely one of the great punches of the year.

See here in the video how that big uppercut blew all the resistance out of his younger opponent, with Santa Cruz going down twice and then being rescued by referee Richard Steele as he stood against the ropes, taking punches unable. You can observe in the fight as shown in a video here that there were times in the fight with Diaz when he simply did not look very strong. He was the one who took more out of Santa Cruz.
Diaz, had a comeback in the 10th, perhaps sensing that Santa Cruz’s soft spot, had that one wonderful punch which made him a champion.
